COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Long Course
Your final race in the 2020 Atlanta Grand Prix begins at the Scofflaw Brewing sign on MacArthur Boulevard, facing west. Get ready for a series of right/left turns, alternating on Maid Lane, Sumter Ave., Dunseath Ave., LaDawn Lane, and then the Whetstone Creek PATH trail. Might want to peek at the map. Take the first left on the trail past the apartment complex, and follow it to Bolton Road. This will take you through some forest and the Whetstone Wetlands, some of the only remaining wetlands in the City of Atlanta.

Take a left on Bolton Road. You’ll recognize the Atlanta Union Mission on your left as the sheriff’s office from the first episode of “The Walking Dead.” Keep an eye out for the 1896 trolley tunnel to your right, under the railroad tracks, too: you won’t be going there, but pretty cool, right? Stay to the left and continue on Hollywood Road when Bolton splits. Swing a right on Peyton Road after you pass Fire Station #28. Continue on Peyton until it becomes Maco, and take the first right at the Magellan gas tanks, onto Whittier Ave.

You are now in Whittier Mill Village. If it’s reminiscent of Cabbagetown, there’s good cause: this was a company town, built around the eponymous Whittier Mill, of which only the ruins of the carpentry shop and the mill tower, which housed administrative offices and the infirmary. Take a left on Parrot Ave. and look for the large sign announcing Whittier Mill Village. Turn right on the singletrack trail past the sign, and follow the black- and yellow-checked flags to the carpenter shop.

From there, cross the field and continue past the tower, onto another trail. Turn right, follow this and the flags parallel to the train tracks, and look for some stairs to the right, among some cedars. Ascend the stairs to Butler Way and continue straight, turning left on Parrot Ave., which merges on Bolton Road. You’ll be heading back east (you might want to be on the sidewalk on the eastbound side of the road).

Continue on Bolton until you pass back under the railroad tracks, and turn right on Marietta Road, and mentally prepare to climb. It just keeps climbing. You’ll pass some yuppie ghetto on the left, the Whetstone Creek PATH trail again, and look for DuPont Commons Drive, not Lane: you want to turn left into the second entrance into DuPont Commons. Go around the traffic circle and continue straight, past the park, looking for a steeply-rising sidewalk on your right. You’ll know it when you see it. Ascend the sidewalk, which affords a nice view of Kennesaw Mountain (nice) and Cobb County (gross). Turn right and follow the trail through the cemetery, to Old Marietta Road. Left turn there.

Continue straight over Maid Lane and through the Jewish cemetery, taking the first left, then a right, then a left again. Stop, though, to enjoy the view of all three Atlanta skylines, and, on a clear day, Stone Mountain. We saved this for the finale: you’re welcome. Take a left into the woods. The road descends to Maid Lane, on which you’ll hang a right, then one last right to finish the course, and the Atlanta Grand Prix, back at the Scofflaw Brewing sign.

Short Course
Your final race in the 2020 Atlanta Grand Prix begins at the Scofflaw Brewing sign on MacArthur Boulevard, facing west. Hang a right on Maid Lane until it ends, then a right on LaDawn Lane, which curves into Chattahoochee Ave. Go up and over the hill, then take a short right on Marietta Blvd., then right into Crest Lawn Cemetery.

In the cemetery, turn right. You’ll continue following the road up and to the back, toward the blue water tower (you’ll see it). There are numerous paths through, so don’t take any hard turns off the road: after passing the mausoleum, continue on the second right: a statue of two people should be up the hill on your left, and the water tower ahead of you. Continue toward that, looping back around the hairpin, and past the woods. Stop and enjoy the view of all three Atlanta skylines, as well as a distant Stone Mountain. We saved this for your grand finale.

Having passed the woods, take the first right, then a left, then a right through the Jewish cemetery. Continue straight across Maid Lane onto the trail through the cemetery. This section is no longer under perpetual care. Look for the black- and yellow-checked flags. Follow the trail to the back, and turn left (otherwise you will just go over a cliff, Wile E. Coyote-style). Take the next right, into DuPont Commons.

Descend the steep concrete walk, and turn left, continuing past the traffic roundabout to Marietta Road. Bear right and down the hill. When you see train tracks, turn right onto the Whetstone Creek PATH trail. This trail eventually continues onto a boardwalk through towering trees and some of the only remaining wetlands in the City of Atlanta. You’re not going that far today, though: turn right on LaDawn Lane, the third street to which you come. Take the second right onto Maid Lane, then a left on MacArthur Blvd., back to the Scofflaw Brewing sign to finish the course and the Atlanta Grand Prix.
